At the start of 2000, Thorkil noted a creeping
dissatisfaction. The company had grown, but so
had the distance between the ‘old’ and the ‘new’
employees.
“The belief among some of the older employees was that ‘In the old days we knew each
other’, and ‘In the old days we did this and we
did that.’ We just had to rewrite this narrative

that everything was beer in the good old days.
A company cannot live for the old days, but
must live for the future,” says Thorkil.
One thing that unites past, present and
future is values. Frode Laursen has always been
a value-based company, but even though the
values were largely lived up to in everyday life,
they had never been formulated and wrien
down. Now, it was time for this to happen.
Consequently, around 30 to 40 employees
met for a weekend in Skanderborg, Denmark to
formulate the set of values. The group consisted
of managers and members of staff, but no
senior management. Thorkil and others with
director titles only arrived at the end to hear
what the participants had come up with.
Lots of suggestions were wrien on boards
and pieces of paper over the weekend, and by
the end of it all, eight values emerged:
• We are here for the customer
• We take responsibility
• We honour our agreements
• We always base decisions on facts
• We strive to improve
• We treat everybody with respect
• We use resources wisely
• We cooperate and pull together as teams
